Maltodextrin binding protein

The Maltodextrin binding protein undergoes a hinge movement between its closed (left image, blue cartoon, 1anf) and open form (left image, red cartoon, 1omp). Application of a normal mode perturbation of dq=180 in the direction of mode 7 transforms the closed form into the open form (right image, animated VanDerWaals spheres). Using this perturbed template in molecular replacement (AMoRe) it becomes possible to solve the structure of the open form. The final R-free after CNS refinement of the perturbed model is 45.3, compared to 51.1 when using the closed form as a template (see also Molmovdb for an analysis of this protein's movement).
